Globe de Mariage

photo photo(1)This is a Globe de Mariage, traditionally given to the bride by her mother-in-law, as a memento of the wedding and marriage. It began in the 1700s and continued up into the early 20th century. It was to contain the bride’s wax orange blossom headpiece, and have photos and other souvenirs of the couple’s life together. Each item has a meaning: the mirrors represent the number of children the couple wants, the birds are for faithfulness, etc. I bought this one at a second hand shop and make up stories about it.
